‘Shoco Pirata’ Thrives in New Habitat at Shoco Boulevard

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Aruba’s beloved owl, known as “Shoco Pirata,” is now living safely and comfortably in a specially designed habitat at Shoco Boulevard near Eagle Beach.

The Shoco Pirata Aruba Conservation story highlights ongoing efforts by JOIA Aruba by Iberostar to protect the island’s iconic Shoco owl. The bird, which lost one eye after a traffic accident several years ago, received treatment with support from Aruba Birdlife Conservation before being released back into the wild.

Despite concerns about its survival, Shoco Pirata returned to its original habitat area, prompting conservationists and hotel developers to take action. A safe environment was created, including artificial nesting sites to support its well-being.

The Shoco Pirata Aruba Conservation initiative led to the development of Shoco Boulevard, an area designed with multiple nesting spaces to protect owls from traffic and environmental risks.

Today, Shoco Pirata has adapted well and even found a mate, with reports of eggs in the nest—an encouraging sign for conservation efforts.

Plans are underway to expand Shoco Boulevard with additional nesting areas, reinforcing long-term protection for Aruba’s native owl population.

The Shoco Pirata Aruba Conservation effort showcases successful collaboration between environmental experts and private sector partners to preserve Aruba’s natural heritage.
