Aruba Faces Urgent Need for More Blood Donors

ORANJESTAD (AAN): Aruba is currently experiencing a growing demand for blood donors due to an increase in serious accidents, surgeries, and medical procedures requiring blood transfusions.

According to Jacqueline Semeleer of the Blood Bank, the Aruba Blood Donor Shortage has become a serious concern. While there are about 1,300 registered donors on the island, World Health Organization guidelines suggest that at least 2,500 donors are needed.

The shortage is especially critical for negative blood types, although demand remains high for common types such as O+ and A+. In many cases, dozens of potential donors must be contacted to secure just a few actual donations.

The Aruba Blood Donor Shortage is further impacted by cancellations and no-shows from registered donors, as well as a decline in long-term donor commitment.

Semeleer emphasized the importance of community awareness and responsibility, noting that becoming a donor involves a commitment to regularly give blood when needed.

To qualify, individuals must be at least 18 years old, in good health, and willing to donate voluntarily. Interested persons can apply through the Blood Bank’s website, where they will undergo screening and medical evaluation.

The Aruba Blood Donor Shortage highlights the urgent need for more community members to step forward and help support the island’s healthcare system.
