Porta pa Harmonia, an initiative by Prime Minister Mike Eman, continues to provide opportunities for youth to develop artistic talent while preserving Aruba’s cultural heritage. During the month of June, which marks the Dera Gay celebration, the program is focusing specifically on traditional music. Instrument teachers have united to teach students how to play the specific rhythms of Dera Gay.
Vio Wester noted that while this is the first experience with the rhythm for many students, they show great enthusiasm and a desire to learn. She stated that the students practice constantly to master the rhythm and play in harmony. Tico Kelly, a violin and cuarta teacher, expressed pride in the growing interest in Arubian music and culture, emphasizing that the project helps keep traditions alive for future generations. Students are preparing presentations that combine rhythm, singing, and instruments.
Percussion instructor Marciano Godette highlighted that learning percussion aids in coordination, discipline, and musical sense, skills that assist with other instruments. He emphasized that constant practice is the key to connecting naturally with the music. Vanessa Croes, director of the Basic Education Section at Scol Amplio Nos Cosecha, underlined that culture, music, and art are essential for integral development. The school expressed gratitude to Porta pa Harmonia and Prime Minister Mike Eman for the opportunity.
