Vehicle Strikes Utility Pole in Piedra Plat Causing Extended Power Outage

A vehicle collision with a utility pole in Piedra Plat on Wednesday afternoon knocked out electricity for several hours across multiple neighborhoods in the area. Utility company NVELMAR responded quickly to the scene and worked through the evening to restore power to all affected customers.

According to initial reports, a car struck the light pole during the afternoon hours, severing power lines and causing a cascade of outages across the surrounding residential and commercial areas. The collision caused significant damage to the pole and associated electrical infrastructure, requiring extensive repair work by NVELMAR crews.

Power Restoration Efforts

NVELMAR dispatched emergency repair teams immediately after receiving reports of the outage. Crews worked through the afternoon and into the evening hours to replace the damaged pole, restring power lines, and restore electrical service to the affected neighborhoods. Power was fully restored by late evening, though some residents reported intermittent service during the repair process.

The utility company acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the extended outage and thanked residents for their patience during the repair operations. NVELMAR has been investing in infrastructure improvements across the island, though incidents involving vehicles striking utility poles continue to be a leading cause of unplanned power outages in residential areas.

Road Safety and Infrastructure Concerns

The incident in Piedra Plat is the latest in a series of vehicle-versus-infrastructure collisions on Aruba’s roads, raising renewed questions about road safety and the placement of utility poles along busy thoroughfares. Transportation officials have noted that many of the island’s roads lack adequate barriers or setbacks to protect utility infrastructure from errant vehicles.

Local residents have called for improved safety measures along the Piedra Plat corridor, including better lighting, clearer road markings, and protective barriers around critical utility infrastructure. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the collision, including whether speed or road conditions contributed to the accident.
