A section of L.G. Smith Boulevard in Oranjestad has officially been renamed Henny Eman Boulevard as of today. The decision was made by the Government of Aruba following a request from Stichting Henny Eman.
The official unveiling is taking place today, exactly one year after the passing of Henny Eman. The renamed stretch of road runs from the Mahuma roundabout to the Sun Plaza roundabout, where Nelson Orlando Oduber Avenue begins.
Through this name change, the government aims to permanently honor Jan Hendrik Albert “Henny” Eman, Aruba’s first Prime Minister and a key figure in the development of the modern Aruban state.
A Deliberate Choice
According to the initiators, the selection of this specific section of the boulevard was made deliberately. This roadway reflects several stages of Aruba’s administrative and economic development during the period when Henny Eman was leading the country.
Along this boulevard, the emergence of modern tourism infrastructure can be clearly seen — a sector that expanded under Eman’s leadership and eventually became the most important economic pillar of the island.
