Oranjestad waterfront heritage was a focus of an Aruba delegation’s visit to the Nederlands Fotomuseum in Rotterdam, where officials explored ideas for adapting historic buildings for cultural and community use, Diario reports.
Restoration offers an example, not an approved design
Prime Minister Mike Eman visited with Minister Wendrick Cicilia, Aruba Ports Authority director Marc Figaroa and Aruba Tourism Authority director Ronella Croes. The delegation was received by Joanne van der Woude. Eman cited the restoration of Pakhuis Santos as an example of retaining historic character while introducing a new function.
Possible uses remain exploratory
According to Diario, Eman said buildings at Oranjestad’s port could potentially serve as a cultural centre, museum or neighborhood facility. The visit generated ideas, not approval of a final project, construction budget or timetable. The report also notes that the delegation encountered a book about Aruba’s Antilla wreck during the museum tour.
