Minister Inspects Multiple Sites for Innovative Housing Development Across Aruba

VIEWS

Last week, the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Telecommunications, Mr. Rene Herde, conducted an island-wide tour to inspect several terrains that may be suitable for innovative housing projects in Aruba.

As part of the National Infrastructure Plan (PNI), Minister Herde visited various locations accompanied by local infrastructure experts, alongside renowned Dutch landscape architect Paul van Beek and urban designer Charles Vermaas.

Paul van Beek is a respected expert in the development of residential neighborhoods in the Netherlands. Both Van Beek and Vermaas are in Aruba to share their knowledge and expertise with Minister Herde and the local infrastructure team.

Aruba’s Growing Housing Challenge

Aruba is currently facing a significant housing challenge driven by multiple long-standing issues. Several departments—such as DLV, DIP, and DOW—have suffered from years of neglect. Poor management within these key infrastructure departments has led to major delays in land allocation and financing processes, making it increasingly difficult for citizens to build their homes.

In previous years, Aruba often granted very large land parcels, which has contributed to today’s shortage of available space for residential development.

Site Visits and Future Vision

During the tour, the minister visited land at Port City (Aruba Ports Authority), followed by a site at Colony, and concluded at a terrain in Burunbundo. These areas hold enormous potential for innovative ideas in infrastructure and housing.

The vision includes shifting away from traditional single-family homes and exploring new residential concepts such as:

  • Modern neighborhood developments
  • Vertical housing (apartment buildings)
  • Efficient land use instead of solely horizontal construction

To improve the process of land allocation, financing, and construction, the government must also consider the individual needs of each resident. A family with parents and two children requires a different housing size compared to a senior citizen living alone.

Aiming for Real Housing Solutions

The ultimate goal is to bring meaningful and lasting solutions to Aruba’s housing challenges, ensuring that every resident—regardless of income—has a fair opportunity to achieve the dream of owning a home.
