The Catholic Church of Aruba has responded to concerns about a September 9 Lourdes Grotto event, calling the experience a lesson and promising greater caution at sacred sites.
Church says organizers had requested permission
According to English 24ora, Art Fashion Aruba told Church representatives that the event would focus on art, culture, folklore and a spiritual connection with nature. The Church said organizers were reminded to maintain standards of decency and respect because Mass is celebrated at the grotto.
Vicar acknowledges monitoring fell short
Father Andres, vicar of the Catholic Church of Aruba, said organizers made efforts involving clothing, cleaning and maintenance, but acknowledged that the Church should have monitored preparations more closely. He apologized for the lack of caution and said sacred objects will be reserved for liturgical celebrations. The Church encouraged the public to learn from the incident rather than condemn individuals or groups.
