Horacio Oduber Hospital says its hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber can support care for several conditions beyond diving-related decompression illness.
Hospital outlines multiple clinical uses
Specialist Dr. Yuri Caceres told 24ora that the chamber may be used for decompression sickness, slow-healing diabetic foot ulcers, severe burns, tissue damage linked to radiotherapy and some aggressive bacterial infections. The treatment delivers oxygen under pressure to increase oxygen reaching tissue with poor circulation and support healing.
Capacity depends on trained staff
The chamber can hold up to 14 patients, according to Caceres, but staffing and safety requirements mean the hospital expects to begin with smaller groups. He said two or three sessions may be possible daily, while team members who accompany patients inside must limit their own exposure to pressurized oxygen.
Funding came through an investment fund and an AZV contribution, the report said. Caceres said the local facility can reduce the need to send some patients abroad, although eligibility and treatment decisions remain clinical matters.
