For Ten Years, Fundacion Zinnia Has Turned Pain into a Powerful ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ Awareness Movement

ORANJESTAD (AAN): For the past ten years, Fundacion Zinnia has been raising awareness in the Aruban community about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. As the island enters the Carnival season—when social drinking increases—the foundation continues to spread its clear message: “Don’t drink and drive.”

According to Sue-Ann Ras of Fundacion Zinnia, it is essential for people to think about the real consequences of their choices. While news of traffic accidents often appears on social media, the long-term pain and trauma experienced by families afterward are rarely visible. This painful reality is what led to the creation of Fundacion Zinnia ten years ago, following the tragic loss of young Zinnia Croes. The foundation was born out of grief, with the goal of ensuring that no other family has to endure the same suffering.

Fundacion Zinnia continues its awareness campaigns, including “Supla pa Bida” and “Amigo Didi.” Citizens who plan to drink are encouraged to use a breathalyzer, available at Service Pharmacies or directly through the foundation. “If you are going to drink, test yourself before deciding to drive. Driving under the influence of alcohol is irresponsible,” Ras emphasized.

Ras also reminded the public to plan ahead by arranging a designated driver, referred to as Amigo Didi or Bo Amigo Responsabel (BAR), before going out. She stressed the importance of making responsible choices, especially during Carnival—a time of culture and celebration, but also increased risk.

“There are people at home and on the road whose lives can be permanently changed by one wrong decision,” Ras said. “The pain our foundation carries is something we are trying to transform into a strong awareness movement in Aruba, so that no other family has to experience this kind of loss.”
