In an interview with Matutino DIARIO, MP Gino Goeloe (FUTURO) said government figures indicate about 8,000 pensioners in Aruba live on Afl. 600–800 per month. He stressed that “no one in Aruba can survive on that amount” and called for urgent fixes and priority support for seniors needing care.
Goeloe explained that when there’s no space at SABA (the public elderly care facility), the government temporarily places seniors in private care homes. If a care home costs around Afl. 1,800 per month, the pension covers Afl. 800 and the government pays the remainder; many homes now cost over Afl. 2,000, he added.
He urged strengthening in-home care so fewer seniors need institutional placement. “Let’s reinforce home care; give Wit Gele Kruis the funding it needs to care for people at home, reducing pressure on care homes. That way, pensioners receiving Afl. 600–800 can access appropriate care more quickly,” Goeloe said.
