During a parliamentary session on Monday morning, Member of Parliament Evelyn Wever-Croes presented her remarks on the 2024–2025 Annual Report of Parliament, raising serious concerns about transparency and accountability.

According to the report, Parliament submitted 2,275 questions, but only 585 were answered by the government. This means less than 26% of questions received a response, leaving 1,684 questions unanswered. Wever-Croes stressed that without proper answers, representatives cannot fully carry out their duties on behalf of the people.

She highlighted that:

  • Questions from AVP-Futuro received only 63% responses, which she described as “shameful.”
  • For the MEP faction, 76% of their questions went unanswered, reflecting a lack of respect for Parliament and citizens.

Wever-Croes emphasized that members dedicate time and energy to raising questions that address real issues within society. The government’s failure to respond undermines public trust in governance and Parliament’s oversight role.

She also pointed out that several requests for parliamentary meetings by MEP have gone unanswered for more than five months. Topics included:

  • Rising domestic gas tariffs.
  • The reform process of the landspakket.
  • False accusations by Minister Gerlien Croes regarding 14 million Florins allegedly missing.
  • A session for the Prime Minister to explain the ministerial candidate screening process.
  • Updates on expanded government medication lists.
  • Negotiations with the Netherlands affecting Aruba’s autonomy.

“These are not just statistics but crucial questions tied to issues that impact our community,” she said. “Without information, the people are left in the dark.”

Closing her remarks, Wever-Croes delivered a hopeful message: “Our people deserve better. In recent years, Aruba has experienced good governance, and citizens have the right to demand it. I believe in the strength, courage, and hope of our people to continue fighting for a government that respects Parliament and truly puts its people first.”
