AHATA Issues Workplace Heat Safety Guidance

Aruba’s hospitality industry is strengthening workplace heat precautions as periods of intense heat continue to affect the island. The Aruba Hotel and Tourism Association (AHATA) has distributed practical guidance intended to help employers protect staff and help workers recognize early warning signs of heat-related illness.

The workplace heat safety material was prepared by AHATA’s Environmental Committee and shared with the association’s members. It focuses on straightforward measures that can reduce exposure for employees whose duties place them outdoors or in other hot conditions.

Recommended protections during the hottest hours

Employers are encouraged to consider the hottest parts of the day when preparing work schedules. The recommendations also emphasize keeping drinking water readily available and providing shaded or cool locations where employees can take short breaks.

Rotating duties can help prevent one employee from remaining in direct sunlight for an extended period. These measures are particularly relevant across Aruba’s tourism and hospitality sector, where many employees work outdoors, near pools and beaches, in gardens, or around buildings exposed to sustained daytime heat.

Workers urged to recognize warning signs

Employees also have an important role in monitoring their own condition and watching colleagues. Reported warning signs include dizziness, nausea, weakness, unusual fatigue and muscle cramps.

If someone develops one or more symptoms, the guidance recommends stopping the activity, moving the person to a cooler location and ensuring that the individual is not left alone. Medical assistance should be sought promptly when symptoms are serious or do not improve.

Extra attention may be necessary for children and older adults because heat can affect individuals differently.

Health and emergency partners contributed

AHATA credited Aruba’s Department of Public Health and the Crisis Management Office for supporting development of the educational material. Bucuti & Tara Beach Resort, a member of AHATA’s Environmental Committee, contributed practical recommendations to the initiative.

The committee brings representatives from member companies together to identify environmental and sustainability needs. Its latest guidance connects worker wellbeing with the tourism industry’s preparation for increasingly hot conditions.
