ORANJESTAD (AAN) – Aruba Launches Youth Fishing Program With First Graduates as the Ministry of Finance, Economic Affairs and the Primary Sector celebrated the successful completion of the first Programa Piskechi, a government initiative designed to inspire young people to pursue fishing and strengthen Aruba’s primary sector.

The first group of 10 participants, aged 10 to 17, received certificates after completing the inaugural course, marking an important milestone in developing the next generation of Aruba’s fishing community.

Hands-On Fishing Education

The training program was delivered in partnership with Oasis Fishing & More, led by experienced fisherman Chito Rasmijn, who guided participants through both practical and theoretical fishing instruction.

The Aruba Launches Youth Fishing Program With First Graduates initiative introduces young people to traditional fishing techniques while encouraging appreciation for Aruba’s maritime heritage and primary industries.

Minister Geoffrey Wever congratulated all participants and emphasized that investing in young people is essential to ensuring the long-term sustainability and resilience of the island’s primary sector.

Investing In The Next Generation

According to Minister Wever, introducing children and teenagers to fishing, agriculture, and other primary sector activities at an early age helps preserve traditional knowledge while encouraging future careers in these industries.

He also thanked Chito Rasmijn and his team for delivering the course with professionalism, dedication, and patience, helping inspire the next generation of Aruban fishers.

Monthly Program To Continue

Following the success of the first course, the government announced that Programa Piskechi will continue on a monthly basis.

Each session will welcome a new group of 10 young participants, who will receive a combination of classroom instruction and practical fishing experience.

Officials also confirmed that a limited number of spaces remain available, with registration open through Minister Wever’s official Facebook page.

The Aruba Launches Youth Fishing Program With First Graduates initiative forms part of the AVP-Futuro government’s broader strategy to strengthen Aruba’s primary sector, improve food security, preserve traditional fishing knowledge, and encourage youth participation in industries that contribute to the island’s long-term sustainability.
