Families hiring Aruba home caregivers are being urged to verify identity, qualifications, experience and references before allowing a caregiver into a residence.
Elderly Affairs director warns of unclear qualifications
Directie Ouderenzaken director Desiree Helder said more people are advertising home-care services online without always making their preparation or credentials clear. She said the risk is greater when an older adult or patient has complex needs involving conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or wound care.
Families advised to contact references directly
Helder recommended asking about diplomas, training and experience with the required type of care. Families should call named employers or organizations to confirm a candidate’s claims and should not make price the only selection criterion. She said established professional organizations may be a safer route when suitable services are available.
