The Amy Lasten Aruba legacy is being honored by Departamento di Cultura Aruba following a lifetime dedicated to theater, artistic education and cultural development on the island.
Lasten was a respected actress, director, educator and cultural promoter whose work left a lasting impact on generations of artists, students and teachers in Aruba.
Her dedication to theater extended far beyond the stage. She viewed the arts as a powerful tool for education, community connection, personal development and addressing important social issues.
Lasten began her studies at the Social Academy in Breda before specializing in drama and theater direction in the Netherlands.
In 1985, she graduated as a theater educator from the institution now known as the Amsterdam University of the Arts.
Her professional training provided the foundation for her return to Aruba, where she became actively involved in developing the island’s theater sector.
During an important period of her career, Lasten worked with Instituto di Cultura Aruba, now known as Departamento di Cultura Aruba.
Through its Theater Section, she helped introduce young people and adults to acting, directing, playwriting, stage design and the creative use of lighting and sound.
Her work contributed to the development of a new generation of local talent.
One important example was Festival di Teatro Sembra y Cosecha, known as FesTeSeCo, which began in 1989.
The festival gave participants of different ages an opportunity to explore their creativity, present original productions and gain experience both onstage and behind the scenes.
Lasten was also closely involved in the establishment and development of Fundacion Arte Pro Arte, known as FARPA.
Through the foundation, she helped make theater more accessible and more connected to the wider community.
Performances were not limited to traditional theaters. Productions also took place in schools, neighborhood centers, alternative buildings and public spaces.
This approach created new forms of interaction between performers, audiences and the environments in which stories were presented.
Supporting Young People Through the Arts
The social and educational dimension of Lasten’s work remained central throughout her career.
In different neighborhoods, she encouraged activities combining theater, music, dance and other forms of artistic expression.
Projects such as “Stars on Stage” involved more than 300 young people and provided an environment where participants could develop discipline, teamwork, creativity and self-confidence.
Her influence also extended to future educators.
As one of the pioneers of Cultureel Kunstzinnige Vorming at Instituto Pedagogico Arubano, Lasten helped integrate culture and the arts into the professional preparation of teachers.
Through this work, her knowledge continued to reach new generations through the educators she helped train.
International Cultural Contribution
Lasten’s contribution also extended beyond Aruba.
Her involvement in initiatives including FITA, Carifesta, Cambio di Horizonte and E Arquitecto y su Invitadonan helped strengthen exchanges between Aruban artists and cultural professionals from the Caribbean, Europe and other parts of the world.
In 2007, she received the National Theater Award in recognition of her career, dedication to theater education and commitment to developing young talent.
The award recognized a professional who devoted much of her life and talent to culture and community.
A Legacy That Continues
The Amy Lasten Aruba legacy lives on not only through the productions she directed or programs she created, but also through the actors, directors, educators and creators who discovered and developed their talents under her guidance.
Her influence can also be seen in the many young people who learned through her work that the arts can provide a voice, create confidence and open opportunities for the future.

Departamento di Cultura Aruba extended its deepest condolences to her husband Stanley Heinze, her children Taino and Satya, her grandchildren, siblings, the Heinze and Lasten families, loved ones, colleagues, former students and everyone whose life she touched.
Amy Lasten is remembered for the opportunities she created, the creativity she encouraged and the lasting contribution she made to Aruba’s cultural community.
Her legacy will continue to live on through the stage, the classroom and the generations she inspired.
