🇦🇼 Aruba Prepares to Celebrate Dia di Betico – Honoring a National Hero

January 25 Marks the Legacy of Gilberto Francois “Betico” Croes

ORANJESTAD – Aruba will soon honor one of its greatest national heroes, Gilberto Francois “Betico” Croes, with vibrant island-wide celebrations on Thursday, January 25, during Dia di Betico. This annual event commemorates Betico’s instrumental role in securing Aruba’s Status Aparte—the special autonomous status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands achieved in 1986.

Though Betico Croes did not live to see the long-term fruits of his vision—tragically falling into a coma after an accident in December 1985 and passing away in November 1986—his legacy lives on. Since 1989, Arubans have celebrated his accomplishments through a national holiday filled with musical performances, sports events, games, and a strong sense of unity.

His unforgettable words still inspire generations:
“Si mi caí na caminda, gara e bandera y sigui cu e lucha”
(“If I fall along the way, grab the flag and continue the struggle”).

Often referred to as the Father of the Aruban Nation, Betico was a teacher, cultural leader, and the driving force behind Aruba’s official flag, hymn, and seal. He was deeply involved in Caribbean organizations during his studies in the Netherlands and later led the Movimiento Electoral di Pueblo (MEP)—the political party that continues to shape Aruba’s government today.

During the 1981 Round Table Conference, Betico secured a timeline for Aruba’s autonomy. While full independence was considered for 1996, it was ultimately set aside in 1990, solidifying Aruba’s Status Aparte as a permanent arrangement.

Stay tuned as Aruba Today brings more updates on the schedule of festivities surrounding Dia di Betico—a day that blends remembrance, pride, and celebration.
