San Nicolas Carnival Route at Risk Due to Street Redesign

ORANJESTAD – July 8, 2025 – San Nicolas’ beloved Carnival route, home to iconic events like Jouvert Morning Parade, is now under threat due to roadworks launched as part of the city’s revitalization.

Work began on Zeppenfeldtstraat on June 9, and the road has since been narrowed significantly, particularly near Setar’s Teleshop. Widened sidewalks and a new curve may now prevent music trucks, floats, and trailers from passing through, potentially ending a Carnival tradition cherished for generations.

Organizers from SMAC (Stichting Musica Aruba Carnival) are expressing concern that the project moved forward without stakeholder consultation, and warn that next year’s parade might require a completely new route — a major cultural loss.

Locals and Carnival veterans fear this is the beginning of the end for San Nicolas’ traditional parade path, with many saying that trucks and floats won’t be able to safely maneuver the newly narrowed turns.

Despite construction already being well underway, there are increasing calls for a reassessment of the redesign, or this vital stretch of the Carnival experience may be lost for good.
