Aruba’s Healing Foods: Nature’s Remedies Still Thriving Today

In an age of superfoods and wellness trends, Aruba continues to turn to age-old remedies rooted in tradition. For generations, islanders have harnessed the healing power of native plants, herbs, and fruits—creating natural treatments for common ailments and embracing a culture of wellness that still thrives today.

🌿 Traditional Knowledge Meets Natural Healing

While Aruba boasts modern pharmacies and healthcare facilities, many locals also rely on traditional remedies passed down through generations. Known as bruhas, these island healers preserve and share the secrets of Aruba’s healing herbs—knowledge gathered in the wild countryside known as the cunucu.

One such expert, Madi, demonstrates how to collect and prepare plants that aid digestion, strengthen immunity, and support postpartum recovery. Remedies range from herbal teas to healing syrups, often prepared outdoors over open fires to capture the island’s natural energy.

🌱 Plants and Their Healing Properties

  • Yerbe di Hole: A variety of basil that enhances flavor and reduces gaminess in stews. Also believed to promote general wellness.

  • Yerbe Sali: Used to treat kidney and gallstones and alleviate fever and flu when combined with eucalyptus and sea grape.

  • Rabo di Cabay: Brewed from bark, this drink is thought to cleanse the blood.

  • Betonica: A root-based tea that combats anemia with a vibrant red color and refreshing taste.

  • Siminia di Watapana: Seeds brewed for post-menstruation or postpartum care; also used to wash wounds for faster healing.

  • Basora Pretu: A gentle postpartum tonic.

🌵 Nature’s External and Internal Remedies

  • Walli-Shalli: A cactus flower and leaf that relieves skin irritation and helps with digestive issues when taken as tea.

  • Aloe Vera: Used both topically and internally to promote healing. Consumed with honey or raw for general health.

  • Cadushi & Prickly Pear: Local cacti offering vitamin-rich fruits. Prickly pear pulp eases indigestion and supports blood sugar and cholesterol control.

  • Bushi Cactus: Another natural source of vitamin C.

🍲 Healing Through Food

Beyond remedies, many of these plants double as ingredients in local dishes, adding not only flavor but functional health benefits. The integration of healing herbs in cuisine keeps Aruba’s cultural identity vibrant and its people well.

🧙🏽‍♀️ The Healers of Aruba

You won’t find bruhas listed online—but nearly every local knows someone who carries on the old ways. These traditional healers continue to play an essential role in island life, preserving Aruba’s unique blend of food, nature, and medicine.
