The Aruba government has announced new regulation and quality standards for short-term vacation rentals, a move aimed at bringing order to one of the fastest-growing segments of the island’s tourism sector.
Minister of Economy and Finance Geoffrey Wever explained the registration process for the sector on October 16, saying the framework is designed to ensure the sector functions optimally. Two companion 24ora reports published minutes apart describe the same announcement and are covered here as one.
Balance and quality
According to the second 24ora report, official Cicilia said the new policy will guarantee balance and quality in the sector. The regulation follows a long public discussion that, until now, had produced no clear and transparent rules for short-term rentals.
Background
Short-term vacation rentals have expanded rapidly across Aruba, raising questions about fair competition with hotels, neighborhood impacts and tax compliance — themes that have featured in public debate for years without a settled framework.
What happens next
With the framework announced, the focus shifts to implementation: the registration process outlined by Wever will determine how and when rental operators come under the new rules.
