APFA employees have chosen the Federation of Aruba Workers, known as FTA, to represent them in employment matters and collective labour agreement negotiations.
The decision followed a referendum organized by Aruba’s government mediator last month. Of the 29 workers who cast ballots, 28 supported FTA representation. That result amounted to 96.6 percent of the votes recorded.
Vote gives FTA a workplace mandate
The referendum asked employees of Algemeen Pensioenfonds Aruba, or APFA, whether they wanted FTA to represent the group. The union said it regards the confidence shown by the vote as a significant responsibility that it intends to approach with seriousness and commitment.
FTA said it will work with the employees to defend their rights, promote fair and dignified working conditions and represent their interests in employment matters.
Collective agreement talks are part of the role
The representation mandate includes negotiation of a collective labour agreement, commonly identified in Aruba as a CAO. According to the union, that work should reflect the needs and aspirations of the employee group.
The result gives APFA employees a designated union representative for future labour discussions. FTA publicly thanked the workers for their support after the referendum result was announced.
