Aruba Fishermen Seek 24-Hour Coastal Access

Aruba fishermen are asking the government to guarantee round-the-clock access to the island’s coast, saying reliable routes are essential for their livelihoods, safety and fishing heritage.

Delegation takes coastal-access request to minister

A four-person fishermen’s delegation recently met Minister Rene Herde and an adviser to present what the group described as urgent needs for continuing their work.

The central request is a written government guarantee of 24-hour coastal access, particularly along the north coast. The group wants future decisions by the government or delegated organizations, including the Aruba Conservation Foundation, to involve fishermen and preserve fair access.

Fishermen cite livelihoods and maritime tradition

The delegation said fishing is both a source of household income and a longstanding part of Aruba’s cultural heritage. Its request covers people who fish from rocks or boats as well as net fishing, shellfish collection, diving and spearfishing.

The fishermen also linked their work to local food security. They said some fishers help monitor the coast and report unusual or illegal activity, while lionfish hunters contribute to controlling an invasive species.

Existing routes and emergency access raise concern

The group identified traditional routes from Andicuri to Daimari through Sabanilla Abou and from Natural Bridge to Boca Druif through Tera Cora. It said fishing requires transporting catches and heavy safety equipment, making long walks from main roads impractical.

Unannounced road closures could also complicate access for police, firefighters or ambulances during a coastal emergency, the delegation said.

Request seeks a formal government commitment

The fishermen referred to international conservation frameworks that allow governments to consider economic, cultural and traditional practices. Their request remains a proposal to the government; the source report did not announce a final access agreement or policy change.
