ORANJESTAD, Aruba — An Aruba tropical wave is expected to bring additional moisture into the region late Saturday night, increasing the possibility of showers and thunderstorms during the weekend.

The Aruba Meteorological Department reported that a high-pressure system over the Atlantic will continue producing moderate to strong easterly winds across the island.

Lingering moisture already present in the region could also generate brief local showers.

As the tropical wave moves westward through the Caribbean, additional moisture could lead to the development of clouds, showers and thunderstorms around Aruba during the weekend.

Tropical Wave Expected Late Saturday

According to the Meteorological Department, the Aruba tropical wave is expected to reach the eastern Caribbean late Saturday.

The system is not being described as a tropical storm or hurricane. Instead, the primary concern for Aruba is the moisture associated with the wave and the possibility of locally unsettled weather.

Cloud development could produce showers accompanied by thunder and lightning in some areas.

The department said rainfall amounts may vary considerably depending on where stronger showers develop.

Localized street flooding could also occur if a heavy shower or thunderstorm passes over a particular area.

Strong Winds Expected Across Aruba

Wind will remain another important weather factor.

Moderate to fresh easterly winds are expected, with stronger gusts possible at times as the Atlantic high-pressure system continues influencing local conditions.

The Meteorological Department reported winds generally ranging from 20 to 39 km/h, while stronger gusts could reach approximately 40 to 61 km/h.

Marine conditions are also expected to remain more challenging along exposed sections of Aruba’s coastline.

Waves between approximately five and seven feet are possible from the eastern to northwestern coastal areas, and authorities have advised operators of small vessels to exercise caution.

A small-craft advisory remains in effect for those coastal sections.

Saharan Dust Could Reduce Air Quality

Along with the Aruba tropical wave, a slight to moderate concentration of Saharan dust is expected to move through the region.

The dust could create hazier skies, temporarily reduce visibility and lead to lower air quality.

People who are sensitive to changes in air quality, particularly those with respiratory problems, are being encouraged to take the conditions into consideration and follow appropriate precautions.

Weekend Weather Could Become Unsettled

Conditions around Aruba are expected to remain partly cloudy, with periods of stronger winds and the possibility of passing showers.

The arrival of additional moisture associated with the Aruba tropical wave could increase cloud development and the chance of thunderstorms during the weekend.

Residents should remain aware that conditions can vary considerably across the island, meaning some locations may experience showers while others remain largely dry.

Drivers should also use additional caution if heavier rainfall causes temporary water accumulation on roads.

People planning boating or other marine activities should pay particular attention to official advisories because stronger winds and rougher seas are expected along exposed coastal sections.

The Aruba Meteorological Department continues to monitor the tropical wave, Saharan dust and regional wind conditions as they move through the Caribbean.
