Savaneta Power Outage Caused by Underground Cable

ORANJESTAD, Aruba – A Savaneta Power Outage left several homes without electricity late Monday night after a fault developed in an underground cable, prompting technicians from N.V. Elmar to respond and restore service shortly after midnight.

Residents in Savaneta and surrounding communities reported losing electricity late in the evening. N.V. Elmar was notified of the interruption and dispatched technical crews to the affected area to determine the cause of the outage.

By approximately 10:54 p.m., Elmar technicians were on their way to Savaneta and nearby neighborhoods to begin troubleshooting the electrical distribution problem. Homes in Pos Chiquito and Sabana Basora were also affected by the interruption.

During the initial inspection, technicians checked the overhead electrical system and found that the fuses on the elevated power lines appeared to be functioning normally. Because no obvious fault was found in the overhead system, the technical team began to suspect that the problem was connected to an underground electrical cable.

At around 11:30 p.m., technicians began testing the high-voltage underground cables using a process known as “megger” testing. This type of diagnostic test helps identify insulation faults or damage within electrical cables that may not be visible from the surface.

Approximately 20 minutes later, the technicians had identified the likely source of the problem. At 11:50 p.m., Elmar officially determined that the interruption had been caused by damage to an underground cable.

The discovery allowed crews to begin the process of isolating the damaged section of the system so that electricity could be safely restored to the affected communities.

The Savaneta Power Outage was gradually resolved shortly after midnight. By approximately 12:10 a.m., power had been restored across Savaneta, and by 12:13 a.m., all affected customers in the surrounding areas had reportedly received electricity again.

The response shows how quickly electrical faults can affect multiple neighborhoods when they involve key parts of the distribution network. Underground cable failures can be more difficult to locate than visible damage to overhead lines because technicians must rely on specialized testing equipment to identify the exact section of cable that has failed.

N.V. Elmar’s technical team worked through the night to locate the fault, isolate the damaged cable and restore electricity as quickly as possible.

No injuries or other incidents related to the outage were reported in the information provided.

Residents in Savaneta, Pos Chiquito and Sabana Basora had electricity restored within roughly two hours of the initial technical response.

The incident also highlights the importance of continuous monitoring and maintenance of Aruba’s electrical infrastructure, particularly underground high-voltage systems that serve multiple residential areas.

Elmar has not provided additional details regarding what caused the underground cable to become damaged or whether further repair work will be required at the location.

For affected residents, however, normal electricity service was restored shortly after midnight, bringing the late-night outage to an end.
