Open Monumentendag 2026 officially opened in Savaneta, bringing together residents, cultural organizations, community leaders, and government representatives to celebrate Aruba’s rich history, heritage, and cultural identity.
The event was organized by Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba in collaboration with Fundacion Savaneta and the Department of Culture Aruba. This year’s edition placed a special focus on Savaneta, a location recognized for its historical significance as Aruba’s first center of governance.
The opening ceremony took place at FUNARI and featured a symbolic transfer of a key representing Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba. The key was passed among young people, community elders, Prime Minister Mike Eman, and representatives of participating organizations. The gesture symbolized the shared responsibility of preserving Aruba’s heritage for future generations.
During the event, Petra Davids, Director of Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba, highlighted the organization’s role in managing and maintaining 19 protected monuments across the island. She explained that Open Monumentendag 2026 serves as one of the foundation’s most important initiatives to promote awareness and education regarding Aruba’s historical landmarks.
Davids emphasized that Savaneta remains a place of exceptional historical value, preserving monuments, cultural landscapes, and traditions that continue to shape Aruba’s national identity.
Prime Minister Mike Eman used the occasion to express appreciation for the work being carried out by Monumentenfonds Aruba and its partners. He also thanked Fundacion Savaneta for encouraging community engagement and preserving local traditions.
In his remarks, Eman stressed that Open Monumentendag 2026 is not only about preserving historic buildings but also about recognizing the people who have dedicated their lives to serving Aruba and its communities.
The Prime Minister noted that monuments exist not only in the form of houses, schools, and historical structures, but also through individuals whose contributions have left a lasting impact on society. He paid tribute to former Governor Fredis Refunjol and other community figures who have inspired younger generations through their service and dedication.
Eman also emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong sense of community in an increasingly busy and fast-paced world. He encouraged residents to continue supporting one another and strengthening the values that unite Aruba as a nation.
Following the official ceremony, attendees enjoyed a cultural program featuring local artists, scouting groups, dance performances, and cultural organizations. The activities showcased the cultural richness of Savaneta and reinforced the role of heritage as a living part of Aruba’s identity.
