Artist and musician Tomas Gonzalez has presented a vision to place a cross atop Hooiberg, Aruba’s second-highest elevation. The proposal, recently shared with local media, stems from Gonzalez’s desire to bless the island and create a unique spiritual landmark for the predominantly Catholic population.
An Argentine native who moved to Aruba in 1990, Gonzalez has spent over three decades contributing to the local culture as a musician and artisan. He explained that his inspiration draws from famous symbols like the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil. He believes a cross on Hooiberg would set Aruba apart from other Caribbean islands while attracting tourists and serving as a site for devout locals.
The proposed design focuses on visibility, with plans for the structure to be illuminated from the foundation at night so it can be seen from all sides. Gonzalez noted that the light could also function as a navigational reference for fishermen and boats in the area. He described the project as a legacy for his family, who have built their lives on the island.
Gonzalez acknowledged that the project requires professional planning and approval from both the government and the community. While recognizing the cross at Ser’i Noka, he feels a structure on the high point of Hooiberg would serve to bless the land.
