Pieters Criticizes Sneek Over Parliamentary Suspension
During a weekly press conference, PPA parliamentarian Eduard Pieters launched a strong critique against President of Parliament Marlon Sneek following the suspension of a meeting involving Minister Gerlien Croes. Pieters argued that the decision to suspend the recent meeting was not merely procedural but a dangerous indication that the Aruba Parliament is losing its independence.
According to Pieters, the action suggests that the legislative body iQs increasingly becoming an instrument to protect the government rather than a mechanism to control it. He emphasized that the President of Parliament holds a constitutional and moral responsibility to remain neutral and respect the Rules of Order.
“We thought the president would finally stand firm to protect Parliament and pressure the minister to answer legitimate questions,” Pieters stated. “But the moment the meeting moved in a direction uncomfortable for the government, the president opted to cut the debate and suspend the meeting ‘tot nadere order’.”
Expressing profound disappointment during his first six months as a parliamentarian, Pieters warned that democracy cannot function with submissive leadership. He stressed that Parliament must be a space where the government is held accountable, rather than serving as an automatic stamp of approval for the cabinet.
