ORANJESTAD (AAN): The Engineers Week Aruba Students Learn About Energy initiative brought students at EPB Oranjestad closer to the world of engineering through an educational visit organized by NV Elmar and the Koninklijk Instituut Van Ingenieurs (KIVI).

As part of the international Engineers Week, representatives from Aruba’s national electricity company NV Elmar and the Royal Netherlands Institute of Engineers (KIVI) visited EPB Oranjestad in Hato to introduce students to the fundamentals of energy transmission and electrical engineering.

The Engineers Week Aruba Students Learn About Energy activity gave students a unique opportunity to understand how electricity is generated, transmitted, and distributed across the island. Through interactive sessions, participants learned about the importance of Aruba’s national power grid and how it supports everyday life on the island.

During the visit, engineers explained the basic principles behind the electrical network that powers homes, businesses, and public infrastructure in Aruba. Students were able to gain insight into how energy systems are designed and maintained to ensure a stable electricity supply for the community.

Rather than relying solely on traditional presentations, the program included hands-on learning activities that allowed students to explore how an electricity distribution system works. By participating in practical demonstrations, students could better visualize the role engineers play in maintaining and improving energy systems.

The goal of the initiative was not only to provide technical knowledge but also to inspire students to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Events like this are designed to spark curiosity and creativity among young people who may become future engineers and innovators.

NV Elmar emphasized that encouraging young talent is essential for Aruba’s long-term development. As technology continues to evolve and energy systems become more complex, the island will need skilled professionals capable of maintaining and improving critical infrastructure.

The Engineers Week Aruba Students Learn About Energy program reflects a broader effort by both Elmar and KIVI to engage students and highlight the importance of engineering professions. By interacting directly with industry professionals, students can gain a better understanding of the opportunities available within the engineering field.

Teachers and organizers expressed appreciation for the collaboration, noting that educational initiatives like these help connect classroom learning with real-world applications.

Through outreach activities and partnerships with schools, NV Elmar hopes to continue encouraging the next generation of engineers in Aruba. By planting the seeds of curiosity and ambition early, programs such as this contribute to building a skilled workforce for the island’s future.

The visit to EPB Oranjestad served as an inspiring reminder that engineering plays a vital role in everyday life and that Aruba’s future innovators may already be sitting in today’s classrooms.
