ORANJESTAD (AAN): The discussion around Aruba Marine ROPV Planning is gaining attention as experts emphasize the need for structured zoning in the ocean, similar to the ROP and ROPV that already exist on land.
Sietske van der Wal, official at Aruba Conservation Foundation (ACF), explained in an interview that when it comes to biodiversity and protected natural areas, there are many possible options. However, such decisions cannot be made overnight.
According to van der Wal, the process has already started. Blue Marine Foundation is supporting the initiative due to its extensive experience in marine conservation and sustainable solutions that can work for all stakeholders. The Department of Nature and Environment (DNM) will be responsible for preparing the necessary documentation so the framework can eventually be formalized into law. Aruba Conservation Foundation will also assist based on its experience as the current manager of the Marine Park.
The need for Aruba Marine ROPV Planning comes at a time when there is increasing interest in marine development. Van der Wal stressed that alignment and structure are essential before further development takes place in Aruba’s waters.
She explained that just as Aruba has ROP and ROPV on land—where specific areas are designated for tourism, recreation, or nature protection—a similar structured system must be created for the sea. With proper Aruba Marine ROPV Planning, it would become much clearer where certain marine projects can or cannot take place.
Currently, many marine project proposals arise without a clearly assigned zoning structure. This creates uncertainty because no definitive designation exists for specific marine areas. Without proper zoning, it becomes difficult to make final decisions regarding development.
Van der Wal noted that it is practical to first evaluate whether the existing land-based zoning model can be adapted to meet marine needs. If that model does not fully align with marine requirements, adjustments will need to be made to create a suitable system.
The goal of Aruba Marine ROPV Planning is to provide clarity, balance development with conservation, and protect biodiversity while allowing responsible growth. Establishing structured marine zoning would support sustainable development and long-term environmental protection for Aruba.
