ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AAN) — The AVP oil sector future Aruba was the focus of a public parliamentary meeting held this week, during which the AVP parliamentary faction engaged with Energy Minister Arthur Dowers to discuss recent developments in the regional oil industry and their implications for Aruba.

During the meeting, the AVP faction presented concrete questions and arguments regarding the future of the oil sector, taking into account international geopolitical and economic changes. The faction also shared findings from a recent visit to the refinery site, where members observed the significant deterioration of existing infrastructure.

According to information presented, restoring the tank farm to operational status would require an estimated US$18 million investment. Several processes are currently underway to identify a potential operator for the tanks. Additionally, partial dismantling of the site is being considered, which is viewed as necessary from both a technical and environmental standpoint, while also offering potential positive economic spin-off effects for Aruba.

The AVP faction emphasized that Aruba’s refinery has been out of operation for many years and cannot be directly compared to facilities on neighboring islands such as Curaçao. As a result, Aruba must pursue a tailored approach based on its own realities and current capabilities.

During the discussions, AVP stressed the importance of fully considering tourism development in any future plans. Any redevelopment of the refinery or surrounding land must take into account tourism as a key pillar of Aruba’s economy.

Two clear paths were identified by the faction:

  • continuing the dismantling and environmental remediation of infrastructure that can no longer be salvaged; and

  • actively analyzing and promoting the most suitable economic development options for the site, based on evolving geopolitical conditions.

Finally, AVP stated that it will remain alert and proactive in the search for an operator for the tank facilities and will also explore opportunities to repair and optimize refinery berths, allowing ships to dock in Aruba once again.

The AVP oil sector future Aruba remains a priority topic, with the faction reaffirming its commitment to oversight, dialogue, and safeguarding Aruba’s long-term economic interests.
