ORANJESTAD, Aruba (AAN) — Permanent garbage bins Aruba will soon be installed at selected locations across the island as part of a new waste management concept announced by the Bureau City Inspector (BCI) and the Ministry of General Affairs.

According to Maikel Gomes of BCI, the current “Baki den Bario” program will be redesigned to include permanent garbage bins instead of temporary placements. While the exact number of bins has not yet been finalized, Gomes stated that enough bins will be installed to meet community needs. A start date for the project has not yet been announced.

The supervision and maintenance of the permanent garbage bins Aruba will remain under the responsibility of BCI. The bins will allow residents to properly separate waste, including green waste, plastic, metal, and other materials, with the exception of asbestos, which continues to fall under the authority of the Department of Technical Inspection (DTI).

Gomes also noted that BCI plans to expand its workforce to support the additional responsibilities created by the new system. Once the budget is finalized, extra crews will be deployed to carry out the necessary work during operating hours from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Security personnel will be assigned to monitor the locations during nighttime hours.

During the interview, Gomes urged the public to stop dumping accumulated waste in unauthorized areas, warning that illegal dumping has recently increased again. He emphasized that dumping garbage in open areas damages the island’s environment, harms ecosystems, and requires significant time, labor, and public funds to clean up.
