ATIA Calls for Better Preparation When Government Changes Public Holidays

ORANJESTAD (AAN): On Monday, January 20, 2026, information circulated on social media indicating that the Government of Aruba intended to declare Monday, January 26, a public holiday, as Betico Day falls on a Sunday this year. The announcement came as a shock to the business community due to the extremely short notice, leaving little time for companies to plan and adjust operations.

The Aruba Trade & Industry Association (ATIA) acknowledged the cultural importance of Betico Day but expressed concern over how the decision was communicated. According to ATIA, announcing such a critical change with significant operational impact—only three days before a weekend—places an unnecessary burden on businesses. Companies require adequate time to adjust schedules, reorganize staffing, and reschedule appointments already confirmed with clients.

ATIA further emphasized that any major change of this nature must be supported by a clear legal framework. Decisions affecting public holidays should be grounded in legislation to ensure transparency and certainty. While the intention behind the decision may reflect goodwill from the responsible ministry toward the general public, ATIA noted that the financial and operational consequences for businesses—and ultimately consumers—were not sufficiently considered.

In closing, ATIA stressed the importance of advance dialogue with businesses and private-sector stakeholders when considering future changes of this magnitude. Such consultation would allow for proper impact assessment and ensure decisions serve the broader community while respecting legal requirements. This approach would also help prevent tensions between employers and employees, as seen in the current situation.
