Vehicle Tax Is Not a “Surprise Overnight Tax,” Says Director Gomes-Pieters

The Director of the Aruba Tax Department (DIMP), Drs. Luenne Gomes-Pieters, emphasized that the motor vehicle tax is not a new tax that “came out of nowhere like a thief in the night.” It has existed for many years.

In a recent interview with DIARIO, Gomes-Pieters explained that DIMP has, for several years now, allowed taxpayers to make partial payments, giving them more financial flexibility to fulfill this obligation. Payments can be made in different installments starting from September.

For the 2026 motor vehicle tax, a total of 2,440 taxpayers have already paid the full year, while 1,133 taxpayers have paid half-year.

According to Gomes-Pieters, retirees are among those who most often pay their tax on time without carrying the debt into the new year. She expressed appreciation for this responsible behavior and encouraged all citizens to follow this example.

The Director noted that every year around this time, many citizens feel DIMP is being strict and ask for more leniency due to end-of-year events such as Sinterklaas, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Carnival, and festive celebrations.
“Every year when January returns, we hear complaints as if this were a new tax imposed suddenly,” Gomes-Pieters said.

She stressed that this tax has been in place for many years, and all citizens know what is expected. Gomes-Pieters advised everyone to budget properly throughout the year, paying in installments to avoid last-minute pressure.

The deadline to pay the first half of the 2026 motor vehicle tax is January 31. If not paid on time, DIMP will issue an additional collection notice with a penalty.

Gomes-Pieters encouraged citizens to enjoy the holiday season while also fulfilling their responsibilities to the country.
“Paying taxes is contributing to Aruba,” she said. “Tax revenue allows the government to invest back into infrastructure, education, sports, public safety, healthcare, and more — investments that benefit all of us.
