Judge Solange Christiaan represented the Common Court of Justice during the 75th anniversary celebration of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), held last week in The Hague. The event was organized by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice and Security.

During the celebration, Judge Christiaan delivered a presentation on the state of human rights in the Dutch Caribbean, highlighting key legal cases and developments that have shaped human rights law in the region. Her address covered notable rulings from the European Court of Human Rights, such as the Murray case (life imprisonment without review) and the Corallo case (detention conditions), as well as the Dutch Supreme Court’s decision on same-sex marriage equality.

Judge Christiaan also took part in a panel discussion alongside Reinier van Zutphen (Dutch Ombudsman), Rick Lawson (Chair of the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights), and Professor Jasper Krommendijk (Human Rights scholar). The panel debated the importance of human rights in both Europe and the Dutch Caribbean, emphasizing the shared responsibility to uphold justice and equality across all parts of the Kingdom.
