In an interview with Diario, Minister of Justice, Integration, and Public Transport, Arthur Dowers, discussed upcoming legislative changes aimed at improving traffic safety for users of eBikes, Steps, eScooters, and bicycles. A special commission has been formed to conduct research and propose updates to existing laws to ensure safer road conditions for everyone in Aruba.

Minister Dowers explained that in the Netherlands, anyone operating these types of vehicles is required to wear a helmet. In Aruba, however, cyclists currently use public roads because there are no dedicated bike lanes or clear regulations in place. He also noted that minors are often seen riding on the streets, even though no specific laws govern their use of these vehicles.

The minister emphasized that the government’s goal is to implement new safety regulations to protect users of these transport modes, who face a higher risk of accidents. However, he also stressed that parents share responsibility in ensuring their children’s safety, encouraging them to be mindful of the dangers when allowing young riders to use e-bikes or e-scooters.
