First Savaneta Seafood Festival Celebrates Aruba’s Fishing Heritage

The fishing industry is a cornerstone of Aruba’s economy, and this week Savaneta hosted its first-ever Seafood Festival, an event aimed at honoring local fishermen and strengthening the island’s primary sector.

Minister of the Primary Sector, Geoffrey Wever, highlighted that many Aruban families have fishing in their blood, with traditions passed down for generations. “An event like this celebrates not only our fishermen but also the Savaneta neighborhood, known as Aruba’s first capital and a hub for fishing heritage. It is something that deserves to continue and grow,” he stated. The festival was organized by the Savaneta First Capital of Aruba Foundation with government support.

Beyond cultural pride, the festival aligns with the government’s goal of maintaining a strong fishing industry while bringing communities together and attracting visitors. “As an island surrounded by the sea, we must continue to strengthen this vital sector, and the government is proud to fully support this initiative,” Minister Wever added.

During the festival, an agreement was signed for the construction and renovation of the Savaneta pier, which involves improvements to the former Brisas del Mar pier. The event also featured a blessing from the Savaneta pastor. Additionally, the government is collaborating with Santa Rosa to provide every fisherman with a safety package, including an emergency alarm system to ensure rapid response in case of accidents at sea.
