ORANJESTAD (AAN): World Wetlands Day Aruba 2026 is being celebrated today, February 2, as Aruba joins the global community in recognizing the importance of wetlands in protecting natural ecosystems and cultural heritage.

This year’s international theme, “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: celebrating cultural heritage,” holds special meaning for Aruba, where coastal areas, lagoons, and salt flats have always played a vital role in the island’s identity and survival.

The Department of Nature and Environment (Directie Natuur en Milieu – DNM) is using World Wetlands Day Aruba 2026 to raise awareness about the conservation of wetlands such as Spaans Lagoon and Bubali Plas. These areas provide essential environmental services and support biodiversity across the island.

Spaans Lagoon, one of Aruba’s most significant wetland areas, contains extensive mangrove forests and is officially recognized as a Ramsar site of international importance. These wetlands play a crucial role in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, and cultural heritage preservation.

Mangroves act as natural barriers against strong waves, storms, and climate-related impacts, while also serving as breeding grounds for fish, migratory birds, and other wildlife. Traditional fishing practices and generational knowledge about coastal behavior are closely linked to these ecosystems, reinforcing the importance of combining modern science with traditional wisdom.

Despite their value, wetlands in Aruba face growing threats from pollution, unsustainable development, and climate change. World Wetlands Day Aruba 2026 serves as a call to action for residents, schools, and environmental organizations to reflect on the importance of these ecosystems and support conservation efforts.

The community is encouraged to visit Spaans Lagoon, learn more about mangrove ecosystems, keep wetland areas clean, and avoid littering in coastal zones. DNM also invites the public to participate in awareness activities and share photos or stories using the hashtag #WorldWetlandsDay2026.

As part of the celebration, DNM is hosting a children’s drawing competition, with submissions accepted until February 5. More information is available on the official DNM Aruba website.
