A judge has ordered the detention of a 29-year-old drug-addicted woman, identified only by the initials E.G., who was convicted of exporting cocaine, Diario reported on October 16.
The woman, who is also pregnant, had been held at KIA. Last month the examining judge released her to stay at a friend’s house so she could give birth — but she did not stay there and is back on the street, still addicted. No agency is willing to take her for mandatory rehabilitation, and the report notes there is a law allowing compulsory rehabilitation but no government-established facility for it.
Background
The case highlights a gap in the system: while the law provides for compulsory treatment, the island lacks a dedicated facility for it.
