Political Maturity Means Standing by Your Decisions,” Says Parliamentarian John Hart

During a public session of the Parliament of Aruba, AVP Member of Parliament John Hart emphasized that the time has come for greater political maturity within the parliamentary chamber. According to Hart, the people of Aruba deserve better leadership — leadership built on responsibility and honesty.

Hart pointed out that during the debate on the Rijkswet Houdbare Overheidsfinanciën Aruba (HOFA), members of the MEP faction used political rhetoric that sought to distort the truth. “They want people to believe that the Bestuurlijk Akkoord signed by the former Prime Minister in June 2024 is irrelevant. But the facts are clear, Mr. President: the Bestuurlijk Akkoord forms the foundation for the legal framework — the very essence of the HOFA law,” Hart stated.

The AVP parliamentarian noted that political maturity begins with sincerity. “If we want to raise the level of politics in Aruba, we must act with political maturity — and that starts with telling the truth, acknowledging reality, and taking responsibility,” he added.

Hart lamented that too often, politicians avoid accountability for their own decisions and prefer to shift blame to others. He drew a clear parallel between the country’s political culture and the broader social condition: “The same lack of responsibility can be seen across our communities — in the decline of neighborhoods, poor maintenance of infrastructure, and deteriorating public buildings. These are the results of irresponsibility and poor planning. It’s time to restore order to our nation,” Hart emphasized.

He further explained that the Bestuurlijk Akkoord, signed on June 4, 2024, between the governments of Aruba and the Netherlands, serves as the legal basis for the current process and for the two draft laws under discussion. Both, he clarified, still need to go through evaluation by the Raad van Advies in Aruba and the Raad van State in the Netherlands before a formal conclusion can be reached.

Hart concluded with a strong message: “We must put our country before our parties, truth before propaganda, and responsibility before rhetoric.
