Aruba’s police are calling on pedestrians and drivers to pay more attention in traffic, after a White Cane Day demonstration by Fundacion FAVI at the Parliament building’s zebra crossing on October 15, Diario reported on October 16.
Police spokesperson Liliana Rasmijn of the Cuerpo Policial Aruba urged drivers to stop for people carrying the white cane with its red stripe, put their smartphones aside, always wear seatbelts, and never leave the scene of an accident.
14 traffic deaths so far in 2026
Rasmijn noted that Aruba has already recorded 14 traffic fatalities in 2026, compared with 10 in all of 2025 — a grim comparison underscoring the urgency of the appeal. She added that Aruba now has more than 100,000 registered vehicles.
The white cane
The white cane is a symbol of independence, confidence and freedom for children and adults with visual impairment, according to a FAVI-linked column published the same day. It helps users orient themselves, detect obstacles and cross streets safely — and drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to recognize and respect it.
