Parliamentarian Xiomara Maduro has spoken out regarding the recent case won by Sabine de Groot against the Government of Aruba, specifically against Minister Gerlien Croes. The ruling concluded that Minister Croes abused her power by removing Sabine from her position without valid reason.
Maduro described the incident as a lamentable case of political persecution against someone who has done significant work for the well-being of Aruba, more than the Minister herself to date.
Sabine de Groot played a key role during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading efforts under the FASE program that provided support to thousands of residents who lost their income. She also worked tirelessly on labor reforms under the Landspakket, all under immense pressure during a time of uncertainty.
In addition, Sabine contributed extensively to Enseñansa pa Empleo (Education for Employment), opening a branch in San Nicolas in collaboration with EPB School, and professionalizing programs with AHATA. This included introducing a Casino Dealer course, an advanced Waiter certification, and ensuring that the Klein Vaarbewijs course gained official recognition from Directie Scheepvaart. These programs have successfully trained many young people, helping them gain the skills needed to secure dignified employment in Aruba.
Maduro questioned how a minister in charge of youth affairs could seek to undermine someone who has done so much to support Aruba’s youth and workforce. She concluded that Minister Croes’ work so far has been “empty of content,” and the act of politically persecuting Sabine de Groot is a serious failure in leadership.
