Otmar Oduber: Debate on Rijkswet Must Not Become a Political Game of Blame

During a press conference of the PPA faction, Parliamentarian Otmar Oduber and party member Eduard Pieters presented a minority note to the President of Parliament, outlining PPA’s vision, ideas, alternatives, and possible solutions regarding the ongoing debate on the Rijkswet, a subject that has become highly polarized in Aruba.

Oduber stressed that the debate should not remain a political game of blame and manipulation. He criticized both MEP and AVP for failing to take responsibility, pointing out that while each side continues to accuse the other, the public is left with confusion and conflicting information.

According to Oduber, PPA took the initiative earlier this year by requesting a public meeting in January, yet as of late September, no such meeting has been held. In the meantime, PPA engaged in consultations with unions, business associations, and community organizations, receiving strong support for its call to build a national front on the issue.

Oduber further expressed concern that Aruba’s delegation to the upcoming IPKO meetings in the Netherlands lacks the full backing of Parliament. He criticized the exclusion of PPA from the commission, which he argued effectively silences the voices of around 3,500 citizens who voted for the party.

He emphasized that PPA’s minority note is essential to ensure that Aruba’s stance is represented and to prevent the debate from being reduced to partisan conflict. “The people need clarity, unity, and direction — not more confusion,” Oduber stated.

With this step, PPA positions itself as a party willing to show leadership and courage, putting concrete alternatives on the table. Oduber and Pieters called for a united national approach where Parliament and the people of Aruba stand together to defend the island’s autonomy and future, beyond political colors.
