New commanders have taken charge of the Aruban and Curaçaoan military units following formal change-of-command ceremonies on both islands.
Experienced officers take command
Major Glenn Werleman has been appointed commander of the Aruban Military, known as ARUMIL. Major Ryan Cabenda has become commander of the Curaçaoan Military, known as CURMIL.
Werleman has been associated with ARUMIL since 1997 and has served in positions within ARUMIL, the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard and the Marine Corps. His recent assignment was as aide-de-camp to the Governor of Curaçao.
Cabenda began his career in 2004 with the Curaçao unit, then known as ANTMIL. He has Coast Guard experience and served as aide-de-camp to the Governor of Curaçao from 2011 to 2015.
Units continue professional development
Both light-infantry units operate under the Commander of the Netherlands Naval Forces in the Caribbean. Their personnel are employed by Aruba and Curaçao and seconded to the regional naval command.
The appointments come as both units work to raise operational standards and further professionalize their personnel.
