MEP Seeks Urgent Debate on Aruba Tour Dispute

The MEP parliamentary faction has requested an urgent public meeting of Parliament as the Aruba tour dispute continues over access, regulation and protected coastal routes.

Member of Parliament Shailiny Tromp-Lee said the faction submitted the request after meeting representatives of the local tour-operator sector. She called for the government and operators to begin direct talks while businesses face uncertainty over future access to off-road routes.

MEP cites employment concerns

According to Tromp-Lee, operators told MEP that about 1,000 working parents could be at risk of losing their livelihoods if the impasse is not resolved. That figure is the faction’s account of information provided by the sector and has not been independently verified.

The operators also warned that locally owned companies could be forced to close. No closure figures or confirmed layoffs were provided in the source report.

Operators say they support regulation

MEP said legal tour operators do not oppose environmental rules. According to the faction, operators are prepared to follow designated routes, use GPS-based route controls and make operational changes intended to protect nature.

Their objection is to decisions they say were made without sufficient consultation. Tromp-Lee argued that regulation should be developed through structured dialogue so that environmental protection and the continuity of lawful tourism businesses can both be addressed.

Request adds a parliamentary step

The call for a public Parliament meeting is a new political development in a dispute already involving the government, tour operators and Aruba Birdlife Conservation. The government separately invited UTV and ATV operators to route talks on September 4 and said it was working on an alternative route.

Tromp-Lee urged Parliament’s president to schedule the requested session as soon as possible. The source report did not say whether a meeting date had been approved.

The next steps in the Aruba tour dispute will depend on the outcome of stakeholder talks, any parliamentary response to MEP’s request and pending legal proceedings concerning access to protected areas.
