A magnitude 4.5 earthquake struck the Caribbean Sea near the coast of Venezuela on Sunday night, December 7, 2025, at 10:27 pm (GMT -4). Although the epicenter was located 48 km ENE of Pueblo Nuevo, Venezuela, the tremor was also felt in several areas of Aruba.

The earthquake occurred at an estimated depth of 10 km, making it relatively shallow. Shallow earthquakes tend to generate stronger surface vibrations, which explains why light shaking reached nearby islands despite the moderate magnitude.

Shaking Felt Across Aruba

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and user reports, residents in multiple parts of Aruba experienced very weak to weak shaking (MMI II–III):

  • San Nicolas – MMI III (Weak)
  • Savaneta – MMI III (Weak)
  • Santa Cruz – MMI III (Weak)
  • Paradera – MMI II (Very Weak)
  • Oranjestad – MMI III (Weak)
  • Noord – MMI III (Weak)

No damage or injuries have been reported in Aruba.

Regional Reports

The strongest shaking was recorded in Pueblo Nuevo and Coro in Venezuela, where the intensity reached MMI IV (Light). Curaçao also recorded weak shaking in several areas.

Earthquake Details

  • Magnitude: 4.5
  • Depth: ~10 km
  • Epicenter: 12.085°N, 69.4973°W
  • Distance to Aruba: 55–80 km (depending on location)
  • Source: USGS (confirmed, manually reviewed)

Seismic Activity in the Region

This quake is the strongest to occur in this part of Venezuela in over 9 years, according to historical data. The region typically experiences around 1 magnitude-4+ quake per year.
