Evelyn Wever-Croes Warns of Challenges to Democracy in Aruba’s Parliament

Member of Parliament and leader of the MEP party, Evelyn Wever-Croes, expressed concern in an interview with DIARIO about the difficult period Aruba is experiencing, marked by many challenges to democracy in Parliament.

According to Wever-Croes, the government has failed to provide adequate information or respond to questions from Parliament over the past six months. She noted that normally, the CAft (Financial Supervision Board) visits Parliament twice a year to share information, but this year’s meeting was canceled by the President of Parliament, reportedly due to an IPKO delegation traveling to the Netherlands.

While acknowledging the importance of IPKO meetings, Wever-Croes emphasized that there are still ten parliamentarians in Aruba, and the Vice-President of Parliament could have overseen the CAft session. She lamented that Parliament is being obstructed from obtaining accurate and transparent financial information.

Wever-Croes described the current environment as one that resembles censorship, accusing the government of withholding information, signing agreements with the Netherlands without informing anyone, and ignoring parliamentary questions — not only from MEP but also from AVP and Futuro.

She raised concerns about sensitive issues, such as the pension age, which is currently under study as part of the Landspakket agreements. Wever-Croes fears that decisions may be made behind closed doors with the Netherlands, without consulting Parliament or the people.

Leaders of the AVP and Futuro factions, Jennifer Arends-Reyes and Ruthlyn Lindor, have also attempted to seek answers and information, but with little success.

“We are living through a time where not even CAft, an independent institution, is allowed to provide Parliament with updates. We are being denied information both from government and independent bodies. This is unacceptable, and we reject it,” Wever-Croes stressed.
