ORANJESTAD – Firefighters responded Friday night after a large brush fire broke out on a fenced property in Mahuma. Upon arrival, crews found an extensive vegetation fire and had to cut through a locked gate to gain access.
Firefighters began battling the blaze, but the fire was so intense that the responding fire truck ran out of water and had to return to refill before continuing operations.
The fire caused concern among nearby residents due to the heavy smoke and also disrupted air traffic at Queen Beatrix International Airport. No injuries were reported.
