The Kingdom FIU seminar opened in Aruba with Finance Minister Geoffrey Wever highlighting investment in financial-intelligence technology and cooperation against financial crime, according to 24ora’s October 20 report.
Three-day seminar brings Kingdom units together
Wever officially opened the event on Monday morning at Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort. FIU-Aruba organized the three-day seminar with the financial intelligence units of the Netherlands, Curaçao and Sint Maarten.
The reported focus included joint efforts against money laundering, terrorism financing and other financial crime. Wever argued that economic innovation and financial integrity need to develop together.
Minister describes technology funding
According to the report, Wever said more than Afl. 4 million had been made available in the recent period to modernize FIU-Aruba’s information technology. The stated aims include safer information processing, analysis of complex money flows and more effective information exchange.
The report did not date each funding decision or confirm completion of the modernization. Wever also stressed cooperation among intelligence units, supervisors, financial institutions, investigators and prosecutors, rather than relying on technology alone.
