Jayburtt Dijkhoff has filed a formal complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office against the Minister of Public Health, Mervin Wyatt-Ras, expressing serious concerns about the state of government accountability in Aruba.
In a statement to the press, Dijkhoff said it was painful for him to reach the point where he felt compelled to take legal action against the minister. He noted that government control had broken down and criticized the Parliament for “washing its hands like Pontius Pilate” instead of responding to his letters or investigating the issues he raised.
Dijkhoff explained that his letter was not based on accusations but rather on a legal question regarding the Landsverordening Openbaarheid van Bestuur (Public Access to Government Information Act), which requires ministers to respond to citizens’ inquiries within three weeks. According to Dijkhoff, the minister refused to comply.
He further criticized the Parliament for its lack of action, stating that it had proven incapable of overseeing the government and that some members appeared not to understand basic Dutch, which he found deeply concerning.
“Fulfilling my duty as a public servant and seeing that the democratic forces have failed, I decided as both a person and a civil servant to file this complaint today with the Public Prosecutor’s Office,” Dijkhoff concluded.
