ORANJESTAD, Aruba – Following the Interparliamentary Kingdom Consultation (IPKO), discussions continued with the IPKO Tripartite Aruba Curacao Sint Maarten meeting, focusing on shared priorities among the Caribbean countries within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

President of Parliament Marlon Sneek explained in an interview that the idea of organizing IPKO meetings both in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom and in the European Netherlands is to provide broader perspective and understanding — especially for new parliamentarians.

According to Sneek, many Dutch representatives who have never visited the Caribbean islands may have limited perceptions about the region. By hosting meetings locally, parliamentarians can better understand the level of development, governance responsibilities, and challenges faced by Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.

The IPKO Tripartite Aruba Curacao Sint Maarten consultation specifically addresses issues directly affecting the three Caribbean countries of the Kingdom. These discussions aim to create alignment on matters that require cooperation and shared solutions.

Sneek emphasized that the tripartite format allows the islands to identify topics that remain unresolved and determine how to move forward together. Among the recurring themes is regional connectivity — particularly affordable travel between the islands.

Connectivity remains a major concern. Sneek pointed out that decades ago, in 1996, airfare between the islands cost around 100 florins. Today, ticket prices are significantly higher, making travel less accessible for many citizens.

The IPKO Tripartite Aruba Curacao Sint Maarten meeting seeks to explore whether governments can take steps to improve pricing structures and strengthen inter-island mobility. Improved connectivity would support family ties, business relations, educational exchange, and regional cooperation.

In addition to transportation, the tripartite discussions also examine legislative coordination. Lawmakers aim to identify areas where policies can be harmonized across the three Caribbean countries to promote more uniform governance within the Kingdom framework.

Sneek reiterated that each parliamentarian will bring the matters discussed during the IPKO Tripartite Aruba Curacao Sint Maarten session back to their respective governments. The goal is to work collaboratively toward practical solutions that benefit citizens across the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.

The continued dialogue highlights the importance of unity, shared responsibility, and structured cooperation among Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, while maintaining constructive engagement with the Netherlands.
